Black & White Accessible Bathroom
This complete bathroom renovation was for an independent senior, living on their own in a spacious bungalow that hadn't been updated since it was built in the 1980s. The client has a large bathroom with a soaker tub, but due to mobility issues they had been using this bathroom for most of their needs since it contained a shower. The client wanted to increase the shower size, since it was a small neo-angle corner unit and update the general style of the room. Given the tight budget, keeping the fixtures in the same location was key while improving usability following universal and accessible design principles. I was able to maximize the shower foot print to a full 48" x 36" and include many accessible features such as a low profile entry, grab bars, fold down seat and adjustable showerhead. The vanity was updated to a higher height with drawers for storage and a comfort height toilet with bidet seat replaced the old unit.
The overall design features a glossy black vanity and closet doors with applied moulding and gold handles against bright white walls. The light floods the room uninterrupted and creates a spacious open feeling even though the shower is almost twice the size and there is a large laundry closet. The gold accents used with the matte black hardware throughout the room adds a touch of elegance, while the greenery and flooring brings warmth and life to the contrasting black and white design.
